The Art of Focus

I first started working in a series back in 2015 when I enrolled in Lisa Call’s ‘Working in a Series’ class.

That was back in the days when textiles was my medium of choice and ‘Leaflines’ my first series. This is one of my favourite pieces from that early series. It was selected for Australia Wide 5 and toured Australia for two years. Forest Pansy 40 x 40cms

There are a number of ways of working in a series depending on the parameters for the series eg theme, colour palette, subject and technique are some of the variables.

During this term of Drawing Class with Linda Dening, each class member selected a subject and we have stayed with that subject as we worked on a range of exercises ….

  • exploring the subject indepth with a detailed and expressive drawing

  • work with a range of techniques to help us explore ideas and different perspectives, including a number of group drawings

  • conveying different moods, stories or symbolic associations

A Daylily from my garden was my choice of subject …. perhaps not the best choice because while there were many flowers to work with at the start of the term, their flowering cycle came to an end! So I had to resort to photos’ to keep going!

I thought it would be really interesting to see how this work looks as a whole and it put together a grid layout - from the initial photo to the final assemblage 3d piece … still a work in progress ….

Working with one subject in multiple ways threw up so many ideas and helped me to push my creative boundaries in different ways and experiment with different techniques and styles across all my series. A great way to develop and expand my artistic skills !

Thank you for taking the time to read … your interest and support is appreciated.

Till next time …. CC Always
